Vaudeville, an American form of a variety show, started to become popular in
the late 1800s as workers began to have more free time and income.
Appealing to the emerging middle-class, the material was written for women and
children, thus drawing an audience from shoppers in New York. As a display
of elegance and success, theatres were constructed with arches, stained glass windows, and
carved details to resemble palaces. A"The RoxyA" is a fine example of this
style, with the gold domed ticket booth offering shows for 5 cents.
