Fun facts: Completed: May 20, 1930 - First building built over 1000 ft. Still the tallest brick building in the world, constructed of approximately 3,826,000 bricks. National register of historic buildings in 1976. No workers died during construction.

Race to the top: When ground breaking happened on September 19, 1928, there was competition in New York City to building the world's largest Skyscraper. Built at a furious pace of 4 floors per week, several other rival buildings were going up at the same time. Because 1 was expected to finish taller - 40 Wall St - architect Van Alen planned the addition of the 125 spire. Constructed and delivered in segments, the spire was secretly added by pushing it up from the inside, thereby earning claim to the tallest building in the world.
